Cancer Research UK’s Mellor Group of Friends fundraising group are proud to be hosting the Mellor Open Gardens fundraising event in aid of the charity and the local parish council. The event, which occurs every 4 years and started in 1992 in a bid to raise money for Cancer Research UK, was postponed in 2020 due to COVID 19 but will be back on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th July 2021.

Mellor Open Gardens will take place across the village of Mellor, which is situated in the borough of Stockport, on 3rd of 4th July from 2-6pm on both days.

The ticketed event will see 14 beautifully designed gardens open up to the public across the weekend, and there will be additional activities and refreshments available at the Mellor Parish Centre which include an art exhibition and garden sale. Parking for the event is also located at the church by the parish centre.

The fundraising group are also calling on the residents of Mellor and Marple Bridge to create their own flower pot people, or ‘MOG pot people’ as they’re fondly known, to display in their garden across the weekend in support of the event

Sarah Hunter, Cancer Research UK’s local Relationship Manager, said: “The Mellor Group of Friends are an absolute inspiration and we can’t thank them enough for their continued commitment to helping Cancer Research UK beat cancer. It’s going to be a fantastic weekend.

“One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

“However, Cancer Research UK has been hit hard by COVID-19. Almost every way we raise money to fund our research was impacted by the pandemic, with our shops temporarily closed, and events cancelled. We now have a clearer picture of the financial impact of COVID-19, and expect to see a reduction in our fundraising income of £250m over three years (2020-2023) compared with our pre-COVID budget. It is thanks to the dedication and commitment of volunteers and supporters, like the Mellor Group of Friends, that we are able to fund our life-saving research.”

Tickets for Mellor Open Gardens can be purchased both in advance at shops in Mellor or at the event itself and cost £8 for a single day or £12 for a weekend ticket.
