Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, says the city-region has a crucial role to play in developing the next generation of scientists as he launched a major scientific festival today (Saturday 12 March).
This weekend the city plays host to New Scientist Live, which has more than 40 speakers and 30 exhibitors showcasing the latest in science and technology.
From the fight against climate change and exploring the deep oceans to growing a supermassive black hole, our relationship with artificial intelligence and the mind’s power to impact health and longevity, New Scientist Live will stimulate, challenge and inspire with some of today’s biggest scientific discoveries and ideas.
Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said.
“It is the first time New Scientist Live has come to Manchester, a world-class hub of scientific and technological learning, research, innovation and industry and we are proud to host this festival.
“Greater Manchester has an important role to play in the future of scientific and technological discovery to build on our heritage of discovery and innovation here.
“I’m pleased to officially open this festival and I’m particularly inspired by the number of young people with us who are passionate about science and technology, including many primary and secondary schools from across Greater Manchester, who are here today. It bodes well because we have an important role to play in developing the scientists of the future.”
