Want to try something new? Manchester’s over 55s are invited to join two free art and music events in Crumpsall and Bury this month.

The fun, free workshops are part of First Time for Everything, a programme designed by Royal Voluntary Service to support physical and mental health and wellbeing. Supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, First Time for Everything gives people, particularly those that are older or less mobile, the opportunity to try something new for free in their local community, and to be social and active.

On Monday 28th March at 2-4pm, there’s a Hammer Art workshop with local craft tutor, Laura Myles from Myles Interiors, at St Matthew’s Community Church Hall, Cleveland Rd, Crumpsall (M8 4QU). Budding artists will be making creative works of art using a hammer, nails and yarn on a wooden base.

Then on Thursday 31st March at 10.30am-12.30pm, there’s Samba Drumming with Bury Music at 99 The Rock, Bury (BL9 0NB). The first-time drummers will learn to play exciting rhythms from Latin America on a range of Samba-inspired instruments like the Surdo, Agogos and Cuicas. Refreshments will be provided at both events. Please note that the workshop venue is upstairs and there is no lift.

According to a recent participant survey, 88% of respondents said that attending a First Time for Everything event helped their mental health and wellbeing, and 80% said they felt less isolated.

Laura Chow, Head of Charities, People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “It’s never too late to try something new and to have fun trying. First Time for Everything activities are a safe, gentle and enjoyable way to be active and social, which are vital to our health and wellbeing. Thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, local people will be able to enjoy a wide range of interesting activities this year.”
