The Irish World Heritage Centre is celebrating the news that it will be the new home for the temporary Manchester Cathedral building, affectionately known by many Mancunians as ‘the Pop Up Cathedral.’

The building has been dismantled and is the process of being transferred to its new home at the Centre in Cheetham Hill.

The repositioning of the building is in preparation for the Cathedral Service which is a central part of the National Commemoration of the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme on Friday 1st July 2016.

The Dean of Manchester, The Very Reverend Rogers Govender, said ‘The Cathedral are delighted to be able to gift such a wonderful building, which has served us well during our renovation. It is a fantastic facility and I am pleased that the local community will be able to benefit from it for years to come.’

Irish World Heritage Centre Chair of the Trustees of the Charity Cllr Sue Murphy, welcomed the gift announcement, saying: “Here in Greater Manchester we are blessed with a strong, vibrant and enthusiastic Irish community. Settling the building here is, in part, acknowledgement of the fantastic communities, infrastructure and cultural diversity offered at the Irish Centre.

Our Centre provides a modern, accessible conference and events facility for the benefit of local communities, visitors and delegates. Much more than this, it continues to play a significant, pivotal role in promoting and encouraging community cohesion, something the area is renowned for. Having this fantastic building gifted to us provides an enormous boost to our work, and opportunity to generate more income for the charity, which will benefit our communities. On behalf of everyone involved in the Irish World Heritage Centre I would like to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Dean and Canons of Manchester Cathedral.”
