Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell and defeated Leigh MP Jo Platt will join former Labour leader Ed Miliband as they today start preliminary work on a formal post-mortem into why the party lost the 2019 general election.

A survey has opened for activists to share their thoughts, with more work, including interviews with the 59 MPs who were defeated in Labour-held seats, set to kick off in early January.

Powell said the probe, set up by activist network Labour Together, will take a “real and meaningful look” at why Labour lost four elections on the trot. “We should have taken the time to understand our losses previously,” she said. “It’s now profoundly important for the future of our party and country that we take a real and meaningful look at why we have fallen short.”

The panel hopes to conclude its work before the leadership election to replace Jeremy Corbyn is over
