One of the most influential British artists of the 20th century has died

Bradford born David Hockney whose colorful paintings restored the human form to art, defying the abstract schools of the mid-20th century, has died at 88.

In 2018, Hockney’s 1972 work Portrait of an Artist sold at Christie’s in New York City for £70M becoming the most expensive painting by a living artist.

Joe Wilson, owner of Smolensky Gallery in Manchester said:

“We are devastated to hear of the passing of David Hockney, an artist so close our hearts here at the gallery.

Hockney’s life and work as a Northern artist inspired much of our approach here at Smolensky. His prolific and unapologetic nature ensured that he will continue to resonate with generations of collectors all over the world.

As is the case when an artist of his calibre sadly passes away, interest in their work rises rapidly. We have had a large influx of sales and enquiries for his work in the hours since, particularly for his ‘Alphabet series’, which remains a unique and accessible entry point to the artist’s oeuvre.

Hockney was already one of the most sought after and collectable artists of the last Century, the importance of his work cannot be overstated. The news of his passing will no doubt be the trigger for many collectors deciding to add his work to their collection and we may see his works rise in hammer price over the next few months.”
