Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder after what was described as a mass brawl in the City Centre which has left 20-year-old man unconscious with stab wounds.

Police were called to reports of a fight at the junction of Great Marlborough Street and Whitworth Street around 4am this morning.

The man was taken to hospital where he is currently receiving treatment. His injuries have been described as serious but not life threatening.

A 21-year-old man was also admitted to hospital with a stab wound. He has now been discharged.

It is believed that the stabbing happened at an event on New Wakefield Street in the city centre.

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder and a man for possession of an offensive weapon. Three men and one woman have been arrested over affray charges.

Police are continuing to investigate and a scene is in place on Great Marlborough Street.

Superintendent Steve Howard, from GMP’s City of Manchester Team said: “First of all my thoughts are with the man and his family.

“We are appealing for the public’s help to try and get to the bottom of what actually happened. We know there was a large group of men fighting, so anyone who witnessed this fight should get in touch with police.

“We have made some arrests but this doesn’t mean our investigation is done, we now need witnesses to the attack who can help us give the man and his family the answers they deserve.”
