Merseyway shopping centre is hosting a pop-up art exhibition next week filled with fantastic works by budding artists at Aquinas College.

The exhibition is the result of an initiative organised by Merseyway and Stockport Council which invited Year 12 students from the college’s Art & Design Department to create artworks which depicted a timeline for Stockport, reaching from the town’s rich heritage to its exciting future or captured local people from Stockport enjoying everyday activities, either at work, shopping, enjoying time out or simply interacting with each other.

The final artwork chosen for display was selected by representatives from Merseyway and Stockport Council across five categories – photography, 3D, textiles, graphic design and fine art.

The shortlisted 100 pieces will now appear at a free pop-up exhibition at the centre in a dedicated unit opposite Waterstones, opening 24 – 27 June, from 9.30 to 4pm each day.

Victoria Nichol, Centre Manager said: “Merseyway is committed to supporting the local community and bringing new and exciting experiences to the centre so we’re delighted to be hosting this fantastic exhibition which really showcases the creativity of local students. With more than 100 pieces to view, it’s definitely worth a visit to the centre and supporting Stockport’s upcoming talent.”

Lauren Walton, Head of Art and Design at Aquinas College said: “Our year 12 Art and Design students welcomed the opportunity to submit work for the Stockport Merseyway live brief.  They submitted work to a very high standard and we are extremely proud to present their work at Merseyway Shopping centre. The students will be at the centre during the week to speak about their work with the community allowing them to gain valuable work experience. We look forward to showcasing the fantastic work that our students have created to everyone.”
