The Prime Minister Boris Johnson has given a hint that Covid restrictions will be eased in England on a nationwide basis, not regionally

In a TV interview on a visit to a vaccination centre in West Yorkshire he said that although he had not yet decided whether there would be a return to the tiering system after lockdown ends he implied that a nationwide approach might be better.

“It may be that a national approach, going down the tiers in a national way, might be better this time round, given that the disease is behaving much more nationally.

If you look at the way the new variant has taken off across the country, it’s a pretty national phenomenon.”

The interview came as Public Health England has identified 11 cases of the South African variant across England with no links to travel.

Labour shadow Home Secretary Nick Thomas-Symond said that the news was deeply worrying & shows the UK Government’s quarantine system isn’t working

Johnson is due to set out his “road map” in the week commencing February 22, following a review of the lockdown, with March 8 targeted as the earliest possible date for reopening schools and easing other measures.
