To mark 50 years since the discovery of pulsars and the 60th anniversary of the Lovell Telescope, the Jodrell Bank Observatory are continuing their year round celebrations with handfuls of events lined up.

To kick start the September celebrations, Professor Joel Weisberg will present the September Lovell lecture on 6 September. As a co-author of over 60 scientific journal articles, the author of an annotated bibliography on pulsars, and the editor of a further book of pulsar articles, Professor Joel Weisberg is a leading figure in the field of pulsar research.

Whats more is that the Jodrell Bank Observatory are holding more events than just lectures. Stars and Stones is an event that offers a rare opportunity to explore The Blackden Trust and  Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre on the same day. You’ll have the chance to discover the science and the stories that link these two great sites and to find out more about the visionary people who have cared for and evolved these magical places.

This exclusive event costs around £27 and will feature both a thrilling talk and tour of the two sites, as well as including morning coffee and lunch. With Stars and Stones you will learn about the subtle parallels that link Jodrell Bank and Blackden as well as experiencing a glimpse of some of the finest archeological and historical resources the trust preserves.

In addition to this, on 28 September, Girls Night Out: The Pulsar Party will be held to celebrate 50 years since the first observation of radio pulsars by the pioneering female astrophysicist Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell.

The Girls Night Out event will start at 7pm, with prices around £13.50, and will last until around 9.30pm. Expect an inspiring introductory talk, a Q&A session with the pulsar hunting team, some hands-on pulsar model making, and a host of interactive experiments in our very own mini pulsar fair. The event is interactive and attendees can even take part in a spot of pulsar hunting.

And that’s just in September. Coming up this Autumn, you can expect to see even more events, activities, talks and tours taking place at the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre. From ‘To Space and Beyond’ to family stargazing nights including ‘Moonshadows and Starlight’, the events taking place in October and November will be fit for the whole family.

Moonshadows and Starlight: Family Stargazing Nights will take place on Thursday 26 October and Thursday 2 November from 6.30-9.30pm.In an unmissable event, the after-hours evening will teach you to navigate the skies to locate the stars.
