The sun will shine bright on crisp evenings as the Science and Industry Museum, Manchester’s popular, adult only special events return during November and December, this time inspired by the Museum’s current, blockbuster exhibition, The Sun.
The Sun: Late on Wednesday 27 November will burst with solar science, poetry, music, crafts, talks, an inflatable planetarium, while visitors have the opportunity to grab a drink from the bar and revel in the social atmosphere. Talks and demonstrations include journalist, Linda Geddes explaining how sunlight is crucial to health and happiness, with other opportunities to get up close with exotic sun dwelling animals, make a sundial plus find out about the promise and perils of geoengineering and its potential impact on climate change.
Members of the student-led social enterprise from Manchester Metropolitan University, MetMUnch, bring expert nutrition advice to help visitors find a path to a proper, daily dose of Vitamin D, while Mirror Divas Glimmer and Glamour light up the night with their super-shiny, stilt walking act.
The Sun exhibition will open throughout the evening with tickets becoming half price at just £4 as part of the late event.
TV presenter Rick Edwards and editor of The New Scientist journal, Dr Michael Brooks, visit on Tuesday 10 December to present a live edition of the Science(ish) Podcast, an increasingly popular look at the science lurking within the scripts of famous films.
Having taken on titles as wide-ranging as the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy and animated classic, Ice Age, the duo take to the Science and Industry Museum stage to discuss Danny Boyle’s 2007 sci-fi adventure, Sunshine.
Going unrecorded and not for release as part of the podcast series, this one-off, irreverent discussion will go into Boyle’s thrilling journey to the sun as a crew seeks to revive the dying star and rescue humanity. A FREE encounter with two playful science-fiction fans, it is unmissable for anyone interested in a lively and humorous take on science and cinema. The Sun exhibition opens to coincide with Edwards and Brooks’ visit from 6pm with tickets half price when booked with a podcast event ticket.
The late night events, alongside continuing daytime talks, activities and exhibitions, take place around multi-million-pound renovation works which are allowing vital restoration and conservation work across the seven-acre museum site to establish the Science and Industry Museum as a beacon for contemporary science and a major cultural destination which explores ideas that change the world. Look out for the new £5 million Special Exhibitions Gallery opening in Autumn 2020 which will originate and host some of the world’s best science exhibitions, and the re-opening of the historic Power Hall in summer 2021.
