Greater Manchester plays host to the biggest event in the international rugby league calendar over the next two days.
Large crowds are expected at the Old Trafford stadium for the double-header of the men’s and women’s Rugby League World Cup finals on Saturday 19 November with Australia against New Zealand in the women’s final at 1:15pm, followed by Australia’s men taking on Samoa.
The wheelchair final between France and England takes place at Manchester Central at 7:30pm on Friday 18 November.
Chief Superintendent Phil Davies, Greater Manchester Police’s Event Commander, said: “GMP has a proud tradition of effectively supporting high-profile sporting events and keeping people safe, and we welcome the opportunity to engage with communities and international visitors in this fantastic and inclusive series of events.
“There will be an increased, visible police presence in and around the stadium and in the city centre before and after the matches.
“We want people to enjoy the finals and our officers will be present to ensure people feel safe.
“We have worked closely with the tournament organisers to make sure that everything is in place for fans attending to have a safe and enjoyable time.
“Public transport will be busier than usual, especially as the Manchester Christmas markets have started, so fans should plan their journeys to and from the stadium.
“There is also a role for the public to play in reporting anything that doesn’t feel right. We need fans to trust their instincts. If you are not sure about something, tell a steward or a police officer.
“I would like to thank those attending each of the local events, and the organisers, for making this such a fantastic tournament so far, and welcome fans from Australia, New Zealand, Samoa and France to our city region to enjoy some northern hospitality.”
