Greater Manchester has taken 1,140 homeless people either sleeping rough or in unsafe shelters into hotels since the beginning of the crisis, the Mayor of Greater Manchester has announced but more people are still becoming homeless.

Andy Burnham described the effort to date as being outstanding but was concerned that there would be no further funding for those who had become homeless since the crisis began.

There were, he added 115 people still on the streets. There are people coming on to the streets through this who perhaps are finding their arrangements, possibly a sofa-surfing arrangement, has broken down.

But also, frustratingly for us, on the latest figures we are still seeing people released from prison to no fixed address and that is adding to the problem.

Evictions, in some cases, haven’t stopped completely, so we are seeing people coming on to the street as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.”
