The Government has said that it will legislate to force water companies to meet sewage discharge targets as it tried to scupper Labour’s attempts to force legislation through

The Environment Secretary Thérèse Coffey announced in a written statement to the Commons, the government will legislate for “a clear target on storm overflow reduction” as an addition to the environment act.

The Labour proposals, put forward by Oldham MP Jim McMahon were similar but would also involve automatic fines for sewage discharges by the Water Companies.

During the Commons debate McMahon said there was “no place exempt from the Tory sewage scandal” adding that sewage was even being discharged from parliament.

“Now it is clear that either the Tories don’t know or they don’t care about the human impact of the Tory sewage scandal” and described how the “Tory sham of a plan” would see dumping continue for decades to come and force households to pay more for non-delivery.

He later tweeted that by voting down the motion and Bill, Tory MPs have again given the green light for sewage dumping to continue for decades to come.
