A Gorton man has been jailed for the manslaughter of his mother and two offences of wounding with intent on two of his family members at their home in August 2024.
Benjamin Obinim aged 23 of Barnard Road, had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and to two woundings.
He was sentenced to a hospital order with restrictions in respect of his previous guilty pleas.
On the night of the horrific incident, police received several calls reporting that a man was attacking his family with a knife.
Police found Obinim’s mother unconscious. She was sadly later pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple stab wounds.
His father was discovered with severe stab wounds and was in hospital for a lengthy period with serious injuries.
Obinim’s sister also suffered multiple stab wounds and received hospital treatment. Two other siblings managed to escape unharmed.
Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe, from GMP’s Major Incident Support Unit, said: “This was a tragic act of extreme violence that has deeply affected the community.
“Our thoughts are with the victims and their family as they continue to recover from this horrific ordeal.
“The incident left the Gorton community in shock, with neighbours and residents expressing their condolences and support for the Obinim family.”
