The works to conserve and repair the war memorials are set to start this summer, most of which are expected to be completed in time for Remembrance Day 2018. Larger projects will be completed as soon as possible after that time.
The Council will be marking 100 years since the end of WW1 with a series of significant events.
There will be a Stockport Day of Remembrance on Sunday 11th November 2018, which will culminate with a lantern procession and the lighting of a beacon on the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery steps; a community art installation; and two new exhibitions which will tell the story of the Art Gallery and of the other memorials in Stockport.
Commemorative paving stones will also be laid on Hazel Grove and Cheadle Hulme war memorials to honour Wilfred Wood and James Kirk, the two Stockport-born Victoria Cross recipients from WW1.

The memorials will not only be a key part of commemorations across the borough, but they’re also incredibly important to our local heritage.”
