in Trafford arrested four people, seized two vehicles, conducted over 60 breath-tests, and issued 20 reports for traffic offences during a drink-drive operation between Christmas and New Year.

The Stretford police team were out on various locations around Trafford on Tuesday 21 December and Wednesday 29 December – conducting routine stops for vehicle defects concerning lights, window tints, number plates, and tyres.

Officers also employed mobile sites across the Trafford district in areas where the public have reported to us saying there is an issue with speeding in the area.

During the course of both the nights, four arrests were made on suspicion of drink or drug driving.

One of the alleged drink drivers has since been charged with the offence, and a suspected drug driver was also arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis, and driving with no insurance; he has been released under investigation pending blood results.

In total, 20 traffic offence reports were issued for speeding and vehicle defects, two cars were seized for having no insurance, and a further 60 breath-tests and 20 drug-wipes were conducted – the vast majority of which were thankfully negative.

Sergeant Neil Dalley, of GMP’s Trafford district, said: “I’m pleased that during the course of this operation we’ve not only been able to take two potentially dangerous drivers – suspected of being under the influence – off the road, but also generally seen a good standard of driving and only ned to issue 10 traffic offence reports.

“That said, we know how dangerous the roads can be and are aware of the local community’s concerns around the safety of all road users; it’s therefore important that we are visible and proactive in getting out there and getting the message across that not sticking to the law when driving on our streets can have the most devastating consequences that we will not allow.

“We’ve had the festive period where reports of drink- and drug-driving do increase, but we know these offences can occur all year-round and we’ll be endeavouring to carry on with this proactive work throughout the year.
