Fancy an evening of extra-terrestrial entertainment and futuristic fun? That’s exactly what’s on offer at one of Manchester’s most popular museums.

The Science and Industry Museum is hosting a free evening of science fiction-themed activities on Wednesday 18 March. The adults-only event includes a programme packed full of activities to entertain everyone from sci-fi dabblers to devotees.

From 7pm – 10pm, the Science Fiction Late will transport visitors into a parallel universe full of interactive workshops, enlightening talks and engaging demonstrations.

There will be more than 20 activities available throughout the evening, including the opportunity to get up close to one of the eggs used in the original Alien film, which is now part of the Science Museum Group’s collection. Visitors will also get the chance to become apprentices at a Jedi Fight Academy workshop, meet the Tenth Doctor and see if they can avoid getting exterminated by a Dalek.

The BBC’s Research and Development team will be immersing guests in a new audio augmented reality experience and Professor Carsten Welsch will be helping to separate science fact from Star Wars fiction during a discussion focusing on physics. Visitors will also get to choose between a red or blue topping for their Matrix porridge with student-led social enterprise, MetMUnch.

Georgina Wells, Contemporary Science Programme Coordinator at the museum, said: “We’re really looking forward to the Science Fiction Late. It’s an unmissable programme of interactive activities that showcase the fun and social side of science. Whether it’s designing a driverless car, watching a diamond laser demo or finding out about the Black Mirror robot bees, there will be lots of opportunities for everyone to get involved.

“The Lates provide adult visitors with an alternative experience of the museum and we encourage anyone interested in science fiction to book a free ticket and come along to this event.”

As well as the activities on offer, visitors can enjoy the museum’s café and bar, which will be serving a special sci-fi themed cocktail on the night.

Lates are out-of-hours events hosted at the Science and Industry Museum aimed specifically at adult audiences. Each one explores a different theme and offers fun and interactive experiences to visitors.

The Science Fiction Late is part of Future Engineers, a programme of exciting and engaging activities for all ages. It is designed to inspire curiosity in science and demonstrate that the skills of an engineer – such as creativity, problem-solving and teamwork – are skills people already use every day.

The Late is free to attend but guests must have a ticket to enter. Due to the popularity of the event, there are only a limited number of tickets still available. Those wanting to secure their place should visit www.scienceandindustrymuseum.org.uk/science-fiction.
