To commemorate the 40th anniversary of LS Lowry’s death in 1976, 50 previously unseen Lowry sketches and drawings from a private collection will be exhibited in the Chapter House.

The exhibition will feature 50 previously unseen Lowry sketches and drawings from a private collection which will be on display in the Chapter House at Manchester Cathedral from Monday 11 July to Sunday 23 July. These characterful pieces represent a life time spent enjoying a casual expression of Lowry’s work as he was famed for his ‘doodles’ on receipts, napkins and menus that he would simply give to the people he met and this collection features gorgeous sketches on cigarette and matchboxes and envelopes as well as some very early ‘study’ work from Lowry’s college sketch book.

The collection will be exhibited in original frames that have been lovingly cherished over the years which bring that ‘common touch’ Lowry so famously reflected in his iconic paintings. The pieces will be presented in the form of a 1950’s living room with pictures featured on the walls, visitors will have a very ‘intimate’ experience and will be able to get ‘up close and personal’ to Lowry’s pencil work.

The exhibition will be supporting a number of high profile charities with private soirees attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Manchester and the Lord Mayor of Manchester.

The exhibition will be free to enter and open to the visitors of the Cathedral. The exhibition will be officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Mr Warren Smith on Monday 11 July at 2.30pm.
