Visitors to IWM North can take part in a free virtual reality experience on the Easter Rising thanks to a new project with BBC Learning.
Using Oculus Rift technology, Easter Rising: Voice of a Rebel lets users step into the memories of Willie McNeive, a 19 year old member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and journey back to Dublin and a moment that changed Irish history forever.

The VR experience makes use of McNeive’s eyewitness account – a recording of which lay undiscovered for over 30 years. Through a remarkable and very personal insight into this a key moment in European history, Easter Rising: Voice of a Rebel presents an artistic vision of the memory of an ordinary man who was swept up into an extraordinary event.

The experience was produced for the BBC by Catherine Allen and Dan Tucker, while BAFTA award winning actor Liam Cunningham, best known as Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones, voices the part of Willie McNeive.

This unique digital experience is suitable for those aged 13 and over, will be available opposite the IWM North shop daily between 11am – 4pm and will last 20 minutes. The event is free and there is no need to book, but use of the headset is subject to availability.

The virtual reality history experience from BBC Learning, Crossover Labs and VRTOV, will then move to IWM London from the 14 until 27 November 2016.
