A man who failed to stop for officers before killing a taxi driver and fleeing the scene has been jailed today in Manchester.

Daniel Sayers,27 of no fixed address was sentenced at Minshull Street Crown Court to eight years and was disqualified from driving for nine years.

He pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at an earlier hearing.

The court heard how on Tuesday 31 July 2018 officers from GMP’s Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit were on patrol in Denton when they attempted to stop a suspicious white Vauxhall Mokka.

The Vauxhall – driven by Sayers – failed to stop for officers on Shoecroft Avenue and a short police pursuit ensued.

During the pursuit Sayers drove at excessive speeds before colliding with a red Fiat 500 that was travelling in front of him, an oncoming black Dacia Sandero and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, 64-year-old taxi driver Allen Ingram, had been helping passengers into his cab when he was struck by Sayers’ Vauxhall.

Sayers again failed to stop and continued along the road before colliding with a wall further up the street and fleeing the scene on foot.

Sadly, despite the best efforts of officers, paramedics and the air ambulance crew, Allen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sayers handed himself in the next day at Cheadle Heath Police Station where he was subsequently arrested and remanded in to custody.

Police Sergeant Jon McColl, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “The reckless actions of Sayers that day tore an innocent man away from his family and friends and the fact that he still didn’t stop his car after fatally injuring Allen, is appalling.

“He showed absolutely no regard for anyone else that day, even the two passengers travelling in his own car, one of whom was also left with serious injuries.

“No sentence given today could ever undo the damage caused by Sayers but I hope it goes some way to helping Allen’s family grieve and move forwards, knowing that the man responsible is now behind bars.”
