A vigil has been held in partnership with the Jewish Representative Council (JRC) and local leaders following the horrific attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue yesterday.

Taking place outside the cordoned off area atThe junction of Middleton Road and Crumpsall Lane (M8 5DS) in the pouring rain

It was also attended by the Deputy Prime Minister,Justice and former Foriegn Secretary David Lammy who was say reports loudly booed by some members of Crumpsall’s Jewish community

Shouts of “Shame on you”, “You’re not welcome here”, and “Go to Palestine” were heard from sections of the crowd

Lammy addressing the vigil said that “We must stand together we must stand in grief in solidarity and in defiance. Grief for the incident lives takes so cruelly. Senseless murders carried out on Yom Kippur, grief that causes so much pain and suffering.”

Cries of ‘stop the marches.’ were also heard to which the Deputy Prime Minister added:

“To those considering marching over the weekend, I ask you to reflect,”

Rabbi Daniel Walker of Heaton Park synagogue told those gathered

“The skies are weeping because yesterday evil and darkness stalked the roads of Manchester and brought death and sorrow”, adding:

“My friends, my community members, Adrian and Melvin died as Jews for being Jews, and so I beg all of the Jewish community here to please strengthen not the opposite, but strengthen your lives as Jews.”

Greater Manchester’s Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson told the vigil:

“We are with you as one in pursuing relentlessly, professionally, ruthlessly all of those who would harm our Jewish community and other communities across Greater Manchester where hate is the originator of their intent.”
