Stockport Council and partners are invitng borough residents to celebrate the joy of moving in their flagship ‘Town of Culture’ event, ‘Stockport Moves’ that will be held on Sunday, July 2, from 10am.

The Stockport Mile kicks off events, an inter-generational race that allows everyone to feel what it’s like to cross the finish line. The race is accessible and open to wheelchairs, adapted trikes and buggies. Race the Town will see top runners across Greater Manchester test their speed on the mile course.

Danny Butler, trails bike champion, is creating a spectacle for the crowds. He will be there with his highly skilled team from the Extreme Mountain Bike Show to perform jaw-dropping stunts on the half-pipe at 10:15 am and 12:45 pm. And that’s not all; there will be dedicated children’s circuits from British Cycling, pedal a smoothie with ABL Health and various bikes to try out on traffic-free routes, such as e-bikes and adapted bikes. You can even cycle to the event to get more movement into your day.

This year’s event has built on the success of previous events. It has transformed into an event that aims to make physical activity for everyone, with the opportunity to try something new—a full timetable of taster activities, including volleyball, boxing and inclusive tennis. Life Leisure and A.C.E will have fun games for all the family. On the gentler side, there will be yoga and chair-based activities.

The event village is bigger and better than ever, with a variety of stalls from local organisations and free activities such as face painting, blood pressure testing from Stockport Council’s Public Health team, the fastest goal challenge with Stockport County Community Trust and their speed cage.

Serving up slices on the day are locals. The Dough Boys and Just Ice will offer a cool-down option with ethical ice cream. As well as local businesses open in the area for food and drink.

Councillor Frankie Singleton, the Cabinet member for Communities, Culture and Sport, said: “This event is about the people of Stockport, all ages and abilities coming together as a community and feeling part of something special and joyful. Moving has so many benefits, it’s incredibly social and helps keep us happy and healthy. We want as many people as possible to join in the free race and fun on the day.”

In the lead-up to the event, organisations from across the borough, including Stockport County, The Seashell Trust, Boost, Life Leisure, and Age UK, will be running Move to Mile programmes. Like Couch to 5K, this new pilot will be helping the least active in our community get moving in an 8-week programme, culminating in a celebration at the event and crossing the finish line at the Stockport Mile.
