The Football League has taken the unprecedented step of postponing Bury’s opening league fixture against the MK Dons this Saturday after failing to receive assurances about the club’s financial position.

Along with Bolton Wanderers, the club were given until 5.00pm on Monday to provide the EFL with  evidence that they have the money to pay the club’s debts and ensure it is able to field a team.

Bolton provided the information but Bury failed to meet the deadline.

In a statement the League said:

“The EFL Board is not satisfied it has received the necessary evidence in regard to the outstanding information it requires that demonstrates how the Club will be funded moving forwards.”

The club under owner Steve Dale are currently in administration as fave the start of the season with a twelve point deduction.Last week they secured a Creditors Voluntary Agreement (CVA) which the chairman at the time said had secured the future of the club but now face further sanctions.

The League have now given another deadline of 12pm this Friday after which it will “make a determination as to whether to suspend Bury’s away fixture at Accrington Stanley on Saturday 10 August.”

”As has been the case throughout this entire process, the EFL will continue to offer its full assistance to the ownership at Bury, but remains clear that while the League is here to support the Club through some extremely complex and complicated issues, the outstanding matters can only be resolved with the cooperation from the Club itself.” added the Footbsll League
