Spain has always been one of the top holiday destinations for Brits. However, it’s Tossa de Mar, a resort town in the Costa Brava region, which is predicted to be the top holiday destination in 2020.

Club Villamar has even issued a statement noting that “Luxury villas in Tossa de Mar, Spain, are in high demand for 2020.”

This isn’t surprising because you can’t go wrong with the gorgeous coastline of Tossa de Mar paired with a luxury villa. It’s the ultimate place in which to relax regardless of whether you’re travelling with friends or family. The area is also growing significantly in popularity. “We have seen a 37% increase in UK travellers,” says Robin Coenen, Club Villamar’s CEO. Club Villamar is being inundated with high numbers of bookings for Villas in Tossa de Mar.

Why Tossa de Mar?

The real question is “Why not Tossa de Mar?” Breathtaking beaches. Check. Crystalline waters. Check. Ancient medieval city. Check. It’s hard to go wrong with this outstanding location.

Located 103 kilometres north of Barcelona, Tossa de Mar is situated in a great spot for exploring the other small towns on the Costa Brava or for visiting the bigger cities of Girona and Barcelona themselves. As an area that was first settled between the 4th and 1st century BC, Tossa de Mar has a rich history and the medieval architecture is one of its many highlights. Tossa de Mar also made a name for itself in more recent times as the first city to declare an anti-bullfighting status in 1989. By wandering the cobbled streets, any visitor is bound to stumble across the heart of the ancient city which is surrounded by fortified walls originally designed to defend the town from pirates. Inside these walls is also Tossa’s local museum, which houses many of the ancient artefacts of the area along with more information on the town’s vibrant past.

But if we’re being honest, it’s not the history of this town that makes it so loved. Its three main beaches are by far the biggest attraction: the Tossa beach, La Mar Menuda, and El Codolar. The dazzling waters of these beaches are consistently awarded the Blue Flag, which is a certification given by the Foundation of Environmental Education for outstanding sustainability and water quality.

Travellers who enjoy the nightlife  won’t be disappointed with their visit to Tossa de Mar as the town comes alive in the evenings. The Villa Nova district is filled to the brim with clubs, bars, and discos for visitors to dance the night away. The more refined can check out the incredible restaurant scene found scattered through the alleys of the old city or near the Mar Menuda beach to get a taste of the local Catalan cuisine.
