The Chancellor Rishi Sunak has indicated that he would like to see the 2 metre rule for social distancing reduced.

Boris Johnson has launched an “urgent” review into whether the two-meter coronavirus social distancing rule should be cut in the face of calls from the hospitality industry, many of whom say that with it in place, it makes little economic sense to open their premises.

The decision over whether to change the rule has always been for the prime minister, but the review will include the advice of economists to factor in the need to help businesses reopen. There are also concerns that scientists oppose the move setting Johnson on course to strain tensions further with the top government scientists.

Sunak told the Andrew Marr show that  “People should hold us responsible and accountable for making those decisions,” he told Marr.

No. 10 aims to complete the review by July 4, when some hospitality businesses could be allowed to open.
