A new sustainable catering operation named ‘Our Place’ has begun a residency at The Open Kitchen Café & Bar at The People’s History Museum.

A series of pop up supper club events will begin in January 2023, featuring food by Chef Iain Thomas, formerly of The Alan in Manchester. The first of sixteen dates will take place on Thursday, 26th and Friday 27th January when diners can enjoy a four course tasting menu featuring produce from local suppliers, showcasing the rich diversity of northern food.

Each supper club will also shine a light on creatives from various creative disciplines, such as art, music, and spoken word from around the Greater Manchester region. Priced at £35 per person, £5 from each ticket supports Only a Pavement Away. The charity partners potential employees with employers and ensures a smooth support structure for both parties.

Chef Iain Thomas met David O’Connor, when they were both working at The Alan on Manchester’s Princess Street – Iain headed up the kitchen operation and David held the role of former sales and marketing director. After leaving the business, they decided to continue their passion for food, hospitality and art with a new project which offers local, seasonal, sustainable food served with love in an all-welcoming space.

The aim of Our Place is to find a permanent site, operating as a business that can provide stable employment to the homeless.

Until that time, it will operate a series of supper clubs at The Open Kitchen, Manchester’s leading zero-waste and sustainable catering company. Based at their café at The People’s History Museum, they work with a range of food businesses to stop good food from being wasted, and also purchase ingredients, working only with local, sustainable, and ethical suppliers. Profits from Open Kitchen go into providing food and supplying meals for people struggling with food insecurity across Greater Manchester.

Our Place supper clubs will support local suppliers and producers, micro-businesses, co-operatives, and use produce from community gardens around the city region. They will create dishes using the best seasonal ingredienets, featured in a menu that reflects the supply and availability of produce.

After an early appearance for Our Place cooking at Manchester Urban Diggers Winter Garden Market over the weekend of 17/18 December 2022, at Platt Fields Market Garden, Fallowfield, further pop-up events are planned for 2023.
