Labour’s candidate for Mayor of Greater Manchester today set out her Greater Manchester Youth Promise during a visit to Manchester Airport, highlighting how partnerships between education and employers can help open up opportunities for young people across the city region.
During the visit, Bev Craig met apprentices and young people who have taken part in the Airport Academy to hear about their experiences and ambitions for the future. She also visited the airport’s Aerozone, where thousands of young people each year take part in interactive sessions designed to inspire careers in aviation, and learnt more about the new Manchester Airport Skills Hub, which is bringing together colleges, employers and industry partners to equip local people with the skills they need for the jobs of the future.
The visit showcased the role Manchester Airport is already playing in supporting young people and jobseekers into work through careers education, pre-employment training and apprenticeships, including tailored support for people who are furthest from the labour market.
Speaking during the visit, Bev outlined the practical commitments at the heart of her Greater Manchester Youth Promise, including a Youth Centre in every town in Greater Manchester and Additional support for care leavers
She said that there will be a work placement for every young person by the age of 18 and will set up a Gen-Z Commission so young people are part of the solution, with their voices heard on issues including work, transport and health
The Greater Manchester Youth Promise will tackle youth unemployment, break down barriers to opportunity and ensure every young person has the support they need to build a successful future.

“Too many young people are being held back from opportunities because they don’t have the right support, experience or confidence to get into work.
“Every young person in Greater Manchester should have the chance to discover their talents and find a path that works for them. That’s why my Greater Manchester Youth Promise will deliver practical support, from Youth Centres and work placements to more help for care leavers.
“It will also make young people part of the decisions that affect their lives, ensuring their voices are heard on issues including work, transport and health.”
