Smoke may still be visible in some areas across Greater Manchester as firefighters continue to work on the moorland fires at Dovestone and Swineshaw.
Around 10 fire appliances remain in operation during the day, with resources reducing overnight. National resilience resources have now been released, with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service retaining the personnel and specialist capability needed to continue operations. Current plans are to maintain resources through the week and into the weekend, with ongoing dry weather continuing to present operational challenges.
It is imperative that members of the public stay away from affected areas, keep access routes clear and avoid activities that could start further fires, including the use of disposable BBQs, campfires and naked flames on moorland.
In an update from Greater Manchester’s Fire Service they say that Seeing smoke in your area does not necessarily mean the fire is worsening. Smoke levels and visibility can change significantly depending on weather conditions and wind direction and strength.
Residents affected by smoke should continue to follow public health advice and monitor the latest air quality information.
