Andy Burnham is removing VAT from electricity bills from October 1, funded by cancelling the Digital ID programme
It’s expected to take around £45 off the average bill and is the first announcement of what is expected to be a number concerning cost of living measures
At the moment it’s funded for just one year
Andy Burnham said:
Westminster has not been working for people for too long, with families struggling with the cost of living.
“That needs to change. I said I wanted to give people breathing space, and that’s what I’m announcing on my second day as Prime Minister.
“We’re taking immediate action to cut taxes on energy bills, put more money in people’s pockets and bring back hope.”
As well as cutting energy bills he is understood to be preparing reinstating the £2 cap on bus fares after it was increased to £3 by the last government.
