The Ordsall Chord will link Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly for the first time, helping to deliver faster and more frequent trains as part of a wider programme of work.
The project is part of Network Rail’s several billion pound Railway Upgrade Plan for the north, helping increase connectivity between towns and cities and enabling the Government’s Northern Powerhouse.

Mike Heywood, from Network Rail and manager of the alliance said: “This is an exciting time for passengers, businesses and the rail industry in the north of England. A better railway supports jobs, housing and economic growth and the new Ordsall Chord has a massive role to play in opening up new and faster journeys.
“Within this alliance of organisations, we have a wide range of skills and experience to make this vital new stretch of railway a reality and deliver the service all rail passengers deserve.”

James McDermott, account director at Amey, said: “This alliance brings together the best experience and expertise in the industry and we’re looking forward to working in partnership to deliver significant improvements to connectivity in the north. “

Doug Lee, delivery director at Siemens, said: “As lead contractor on all signalling, power and communications work, we are delighted to be part of such a strong alliance. We are now looking forward to working closely with colleagues throughout the supply chain to deliver this major programme, which will involve more than 300 signalling equivalent units.”

Alan Cox, sector director at BAM Nuttall, said: “This alliance continues a long association we have had with the railway in the North West and we are delighted to be creating such an important new link with an iconic structure that will enrich the railway heritage and passenger experience in the whole region.”

James Richardson, managing director at Skanska said: “This is a significant part of Network Rail’s plan to stimulate economic growth in the north of England and Skanska is delighted to be part of the alliance delivery team helping to achieve this goal.”
