Drivers are being encouraged to twiddle their radio dials thisweek and tune into a new pop-up station broadcasting potentially life-saving information.

From 6am on Monday 28 September, Road Safety Radio will broadcast on 87.7FM across Greater Manchester, giving motorists vital information about issues such as drink driving, pedestrian safety, speeding and distractions, on the road.

As well as news updates and features, the station will also broadcast interesting and emotive case studies featuring both victims of and those responsible for road traffic incidents

The station is an initiative from DriveSafe, run by Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership, with additional content provided by partners including Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and many Local Authorities.

TfGM Head of Highways, Peter Molyneux, said: “Radio Safety Radio will be broadcasting information that is not only highly important and potentially lifesaving, but also interesting and informative so I would encourage motorists to tune in and give it a try.

“A lot of the content is taken from real-life experiences so hopefully listeners can appreciate it and take on board some of the vital information we want to convey.

“The project is part of the ongoing work we are doing with local authorities and key partners to further reduce the number of casualties and keep everyone on our roads safe.”

Produced by On The Eighth, a radio and audio production company based in MediaCityUK, the station will broadcast from a transmitter on the roof of TfGM headquarters at 2 Piccadilly Place for 24 hours a day until 6pm on Sunday 4 October.

The station will also be available online at www.roadsafetyradio.com and will be supported by the Twitter handle @roadsafetyradio, both of which are already live.

Listeners are being encouraged to provide opinion and participate in debate and discussion on Twitter using the #roadsafetyradio hashtag. Anyone using the hashtag will automatically be entered into a free draw to win an iPad mini 4.
