Police responding to a man acting suspiciously outside a school in Dukinfield are continuing to search the area.
Officers were called shortly before 8.45am this morning to a number of reports of a man acting suspiciously on Yew Tree Lane.

Armed response officers swiftly attended due to reports that the man, who was wearing a stab vest, had a firearm.

On attendance, officers negotiated with a 30-year-old man who was detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act and arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence a short time later.

An extensive search of the surrounding area is being carried out and no trace of any weapon has been found.

There will be increased patrols in the area throughout the day to reassure the community.

Territorial Commander for Tameside, Chief Superintendent Neil Evans, said: “We are currently working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident this morning with the school and local authorities.

“This is a prime example of officers responding quickly and efficiently to community concerns to ensure the safety of the people of Greater Manchester.

“We have negated any threat to the safety of the school or the wider public however, neighbourhood officers will remain in the area throughout the day.

“I’d encourage anyone with any concerns to approach us and I’d like to thank the community for their support as we have carried out our enquiries.”
