Greater Manchester Police have issued a statement following the terror attacker on the Jewish community on Sydney’s Bondi beach earlier today

Coming just two months after the attack on a synagogue in Crumpsall police said

“We are aware of the recent attack targeting the Jewish community on Bondi Beach, Australia, and understand the concerns this may cause locally, and for those attending Hanukkah celebrations in the coming days.

“Please be assured that we are working closely with partners and event organisers to ensure the safety and security of all those attending any community events.”

“You may notice increased visible patrols around the city and in local areas. Please feel free to speak to our officers and let them know if you have any concerns.”

Twelve people including a Child and police officer were killed and at least 29 injured in a terror attack at Australia’s Bondi beach after two gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration

A London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger has been named as one of the victims of the attack.

Chris Minns, the premier of New South Wales, said: “Our heart bleeds for Australia’s Jewish community tonight.

“I can only imagine the pain that they’re feeling right now to see their loved ones killed as they celebrate this ancient holiday”.

During a televised address, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the Bondi Beach shooting “an act of evil antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation”.

“We have seen Australians today run towards dangers in order to help others. These Australians are heroes and their bravery has saved lives”, he added.

In a statement Andy Burnham and Deputy Kate Green said

“We share the horror and sadness at the attack on Jewish families as they gathered to celebrate Hanukkah in Bondi Beach.

In Greater Manchester we know the pain and disbelief that follows such appalling incidents, and our thoughts are with all of those affected.

Antisemitism has no place in our society.

We are working closely with Greater Manchester Police and community partners to ensure people feel safe and supported during Hanukkah and beyond.”
