Police officers were attacked at an unofficial street party in Moss Side following the Manchester Caribbean Carnival at the weekend after a 25 year old man was arrested.

bottles and other missiles were thrown at them by members of the public. One officer was spat at and required hospital treatment.

Superintendent Dave Pester, Silver Commander for the Caribbean Carnival, said: “The Manchester Caribbean Carnival was a successful community event, enjoyed safely and responsibly by those who attended.

“Following the event, there were a number of unofficial street celebrations in Moss Side, and it was at one of these street parties that our officers were spat at and had bottles thrown at them.

“Our officers were deployed to support the community celebrations and were responding to reports of a man threatening members of the public with a screwdriver when they themselves were attacked.

“It is completely unacceptable that officers should be confronted with any violence while they are trying to do their jobs and protect the public.

“I would urge anyone with information, or anyone with photos or video footage of this incident to get in touch with us as soon as possible on 0161 856 4223.”
