National first aid charity St John Ambulance is celebrating the successful opening of a brand new Cadet unit in Stretford.

The unit had its first meeting on 27 September and already has a full complement of young volunteers from the age of 10 upwards. The group will now meet weekly, on Friday evenings, at Firswood Scout Hut, 184 Kings Road, Stretford.

The charity is now appealing for local adults to step forward and train as Youth Helpers. These volunteers will work with the Cadets and guide them through training in essential first aid skills to become the next generation of life savers.

No prior first aid or volunteering experience is needed as all necessary training (such as First Aid and safeguarding) will be provided. Applicants for the Youth Helper roles must be aged 18 or over and will need to pass an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. As a volunteer, you’ll get lots of development opportunities, and access to exclusive discount sites like Blue Light Card.

Every new Youth Helper recruited means that another eight Cadets can be enrolled in the unit.

Unit Manager David Jones said: “We’re thrilled to have opened our new Cadet unit in Stretford and are looking forward to working with our young volunteers and watching them develop into well-trained first aiders with the ability to save a life. We’re now keen to hear from anyone who would like to join our friendly local group as a Youth Helper and work with us to develop the unit. You never know when you might need to deliver first aid to someone, and our aim is to help make the local community even safer through our activities.”

Anyone interested in these roles can contact David for an informal chat at david.jones6@sja.org.uk.
