A 33-year-old man had sustained a serious stab wound and remains in hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The incident happened on an underpass near Mary Street in Cheetham Hill on Sunday afternoon.

A 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempt murder. He has since been released and eliminated from all enquiries.

Police are treating the incident as a targeted attack and are appealing to anyone in the area who may have witnessed what happened or are holding information to come forward and speak with police.

Detective Inspector Claire Moss of Greater Manchester Police said: “We fully understand the distress that incidents such as this can cause for the community but I want to reassure the public that we are working round the clock to understand the full circumstances that led to this man being seriously injured.

“Whilst our enquiries remain ongoing we are treating this incident as a targeted attack and we don’t believe there to be any wider threat to the community. We do however believe there are people out there who are likely to be holding information that could greatly assist our investigation and I would appeal to them, or anyone who may have witnessed the assault, to come forward and speak with us.”
