There were busy scenes outside the Manchester branch of the Bank of England in King Street as applicants for the War Loans queued to qualify for the discounts on advanced payments.

Manchester County Coroner heard that case of a sixty seven year old lady who was knocked down on the Stretford Road. Alice Barlow died from her injuries after being hit by a car after leaving her employers house in Stamford Road. 

According to the papers Alice was a victim of the blackout and a verdict of accidental death was recorded. 

A Milnrow vicar was killed in a motoring accident in Cumberland.The Rev. FP Wright being driven up a hill while on holiday with his daughter in Keswick when the car began to roll backwards.Mr Wright asked the driver should he get out and then leapt out in an attempt to get a stone to stop the car from running backwards and was killed. 

He had been a vicar in the parish for 32 years. 

There was speculation that the King would be visiting Manchester as part of his tour of industrial areas. He was currently in Coventry.
