The UK’s premiere touring ballet company, Birmingham Royal Ballet, open their international tour of Swan Lake at The Lowry, Salford, from Wed 23 – Sat 26 September 2015.
Birmingham Royal Ballet, one of the world’s leading classical companies, celebrates its 25th anniversary with its largest ever tour of the treasured production Swan Lake, created by the company’s Director Laureate Sir Peter Wright. The 2015/16 tour will play 51 performances in 11 different venues over England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Japan.

By a moonlit lake, a grieving prince witnesses the transformation of a swan into a beautiful princess. Compelled by an evil spell to spend her days in the form of a bird, she can only be saved by the power of love.

This classic production of ballet’s greatest love story features a sumptuous, towering gothic design by Philip Prowse with spectacular costumes including the famous flock of white tutus appearing from a glassy lake of dry ice.

Every performance of Swan Lake uses over 500 costumes. Over 145 headdresses, hats and helmets, 30 pairs of earrings and 60 tutus are toured with the production.

The Royal Ballet Sinfonia’s fifty musicians will bring Tchaikovsky’s legendary score to life in a spectacular evening of live performance never to be forgotten.

Birmingham Royal Ballet will also present a specially adapted performance for children aged 3 – 7 years old titled First Steps: A Child’s Swan Lake. This hour-long interactive programme is designed as a fun and colourful introduction to the exciting world of ballet featuring a full company of dancers and orchestra. Tickets are priced at just £10.

As part of the company’s ongoing commitment to involving audiences in the creative process, this season will also see two firsts for Salford audiences. Ahead of curtain up on Friday evening’s performance (25 Sep), audience members are invited to join a select panel of some of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s most influential creative forces as they discuss life and performance as part of a world-renowned ballet company. The event is free for ticket holders.

On Saturday morning (26 Sep) members of the public are then invited behind closed doors as the company of dancers open up their daily class. This is a rare and fascinating opportunity for members of the public to take a peek behind the scenes to witness the preparation and dedication needed to be part of a touring ballet company.
