We’ve all heard of 4X4s and have at least a vague notion that they are associated with rugged driving in difficult or rocky terrain. But what is a 4X4, exactly? And why might you need one?

If you have any interest in driving on less-than-perfect roads, it would be to your advantage to learn more about 4X4s. When you’re in the UAE, you can rent g63 dubai choosing within the best deals.

What is a 4X4, and why are they different from other cars?

As mentioned above, a 4X4 distinguishes itself from other types of cars because of its ability to handle rough or otherwise difficult terrain. This includes the following characteristics:

  • Off-road capability. If you’re going to be driving off-road, getting a 4X4 is a must. This includes all manner of unusual terrain: gravel, mud, sand, and especially snow and ice. 4X4s are also important if you’re going to be driving on inclines. Thus, 4X4 is the best choice for those who want to rent a car for dune driving in Dubai or hire one for rocky Rubicon Trail in California.

What does this mean in terms of features you should be looking for? 4X4s have different ranges of ground clearance, for example. Good ground clearance is considered to be 9-12 inches off the ground. This will help you navigate through deep snow drifts, for example.

Another feature to look for is approach and departure angles. You should be able to hit an approach angle of 37 degrees, and a departure angle of 15-20 degrees. In addition, you should look for a differential lock, to help you provide wheel spin.

  • Four-wheel drive. Cars that have four-wheel drive have “systems” of these components that are categorized by type. Different 4WD models include 2H, 4H, and 4L, each of which allows you to adjust your traction depending on the type of conditions you are driving in. Some of these systems are manual, and some are electronically controlled. With the electronic versions, you can actually distribute power among different wheels, depending on your needs at any given time.

The difference between these models is the following: 2H is used when you only need two-wheel drive but in high range. 4H refers to high range driving at normal driving speed, but where you need additional traction. 4L is 4WD “low,” for when you need additional torque, but will be driving at lower speeds.

  • Traction control. The better 4X4s will have advanced traction control. Every car has a traction control system. The traction control system is what helps the driver detect if a loss of traction occurs in one of the car’s wheels. If you discover that one of your wheels is starting to lose its grip on the road, your TCS will automatically either apply the breaks or reduce the car’s engine power to the problematic wheel.

What makes 4X4s stand out in the market and especially among car rental services in this respect is that their TCSes are far superior to their standard car counterparts. Systems are better able to detect and respond to problems on the road.

  • Recovery points. 4X4s have built-in recovery points that help them break free if they become stuck. One of these is called a tow hook (also known as a tow hitch). A tow hook is a device that you attach to the back of your car that allows you to tow it if necessary.

Another recovery point is called a recovery loop or strap. You can use these to loop onto your car and pull it when it is stuck.

  • Added protection. 4X4s have added parts such as skid plates, which is a material that is affixed to the underside of a vehicle to prevent damage. They also contain rock sliders, which are strips of sheet metal that run between the front and rear tires under the door line to add a protective layer to this part of the car.

Don’t scrimp on your off-roading experience

If you’re seriously interested in off-roading, you don’t want to settle for second best. Many of the features described here are requirements for driving on rough or unusual terrain. If you don’t take the necessary precautions when heading out on your adventure ride, you might find yourself caught in a very dangerous situation.

With the right bought or rented 4X4, you should be prepared to handle anything. And then you will have the ride of your life.
