Join us, said the programme notes, for a catapultastic evening of clowning, contraptions, comedy and courage as one man’s belief in the near impossible is put to the test.

This was the start of Refract, the Waterside at Sale’s week of performances, music and events,a blast to begin

Matt Tang’s performance dressed in red head to foot was almost a cross between Tommy Cooper and Marcel Marceau comes courtesy of Bristol based PanGottic.

”We like playing to audiences who aren’t necessarily regular arts attenders.”

It is amazing how one man, bereft of speech can hold the audiences attention with a few props, various gadgets seemingly put together in a Heath Robinson mentality designed to propel tennis balls, willing audience members and when necessary a bit of improvisation.

Mix in nets of various shapes and sizes,a metal bucket and some wooden packing cases and it’s amazing how the audience can be kept both amused and transfixed.

The finale involved a small paddling pool,a balloon filled with water and something that resembled a medieval catapult and a game of Russian Roulette followed by a version of the William Tell Myth.

It certainly got Refract 18 off to a bang

Refract 18 runs until the 28th July at the Waterside Sale Details
