Anyone in need of some chill out time can enjoy the open spaces of Peel Park even in typical Salford weather thanks to an innovative project to put a virtual version of the park online.

Virtual Peel Park, led by the University of Salford working with Salford City Council, has transformed this historic green space into a publicly accessible digital tool, thanks to volunteers with drones, phone cameras and special 360-degree image equipment.

With information on transport links, accessibility, biodiversity and cultural heritage, Virtual Peel Park aims to make the park more accessible and welcoming to all, even for people who might otherwise struggle to get there.

Major of Salford, Councillor Paul Dennett helped to launch the initiative as it now features onSalford City Council’s website.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “This innovative project sees Peel Park through new technology so people can experience it in a totally different way. People can learn all about the cultural heritage and biodiversity and it makes the park much more accessible and welcoming for people who might not be able to get there easily.”

“I’d like to thank all those involved for bringing this important project to life and I look forward to following its success.”

The Virtual Peel Park project has been initiated and led by Dr Simon Hutchinson from the University of Salford School of Science, Engineering and Environment alongside Marta Strzelecka, the University’s Sustainability Engagement Officer.

Simon said: “This is great way of making green spaces more accessible for everyone. It was a privilege to work with so many people within and beyond the university to get this off the ground and I hope it helps to get people out into Peel Park and elsewhere.”

Virtual Peel Park was created in collaboration with Jessica Britch in the Salford Ranger Team and the University of Salford Sustainability Office, as well as Salford students, staff and local residents.

Earlier this year, Virtual Peel Park was nominated as finalist in the prestigious Green Gown Awards which recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives undertaken by universities and colleges across the world.
