In another blow to Rishi Sunak, two ministers have resigned from his Government this afternoon

Robert Halfon has unexpectedly resigned as skills, apprenticeships and higher education minister and at the age of 55 will stand down as an MP at the next election

He said in a letter to the Prime Minister:

“I feel that it is time for me to step down at the forthcoming General Election, and in doing so, to resign as a Minister in your Government”

James Heappey meanwhile has resigned as armed forces minister and will also quit as an MP at the next election

Heappy said he was standing down to “prioritise my family and pursue a new career.”

Both would have been tipped for frontbench roles if the Tories were to win power for a fifth term.
