Liz Truss has admitted this morning that she and the Chancellor bungled the mini-budget.

Interviewed by Laura Kuenssberg on the BBC the Prime Minister said that

“I stand by the package… I do accept we should have laid the ground better. I have learnt from that. I will make sure in future we do a better job of laying the ground”.

She however insists “we have been dealing with a unique set of circumstances here in the UK… we have a clear plan to put us on a good long-term footing.”

She also says that rising interest rates are a global issue.

“I think” she added that “it was the right decision to increase borrowing this winter.. of course it’s right to bring down borrowing as a proportion of GDP in the medium turn”

Pressed on reports that she was looking at cutting public services she refused to say if she’s going to slash public spending

“I believe in getting value for money for the tax payer…” she tells Kuenssberg says adding that she believes in maximising growth, taxes being simpler and lower

Asked whether she was absolutely committed to abolishing the top rate of tax for the wealthiest people in this country?” she replied “Yes.”

However she revealed that the Cabinet was not consulted over decision to scrap the 45p top tax rate, adding: ‘It was a decision the Chancellor made’

And on reports that she is failing to get the backing of her own MP’s for her policies she says “I will do what I need to do to win the hearts and minds of my colleagues” across the party. “
