The Labour leader of Trafford Council has written to the Health Secretary asking for urgent clarity before the Borough is released from local lockdown restrictions.

Andrew Western said that he has written to Matt Hancock regarding the decision to overrule TraffordCouncil on local restrictions and is calling for an urgent action plan setting out how the Government will move forward given our increased rates of infection.

He said that he was very disappointed to say that our representations to national government were completely ignored, along with the views of two of our three local MPs.

This complete lack of regard for the views of local representatives only serves to exacerbate fears that national government never intended to meaningfully consider such views, but rather to only have regard for the views of Conservative MPs in the areas affected.”

Trafford’s infection has continue to rise and is currently standing at 35.8 per 100,000 people

Cllr Western added that “Nobody in your team had the basic courtesy to explain this decision to anybody within the council or indeed Greater Manchester. It is imperative that we are able to have confidence in your decisions and understand the rationale driving them in order that we can justify these decisions to our communities.“

That nobody bothered to contact me or anybody else is a significant failure and a show of disrespect to local government on your part.

I am left with little confidence in your department at a time of national crisis.”
