During Carers’ Week, Rochdale MP, Tony Lloyd, is calling on the government to provide greater support for carers, including putting in place a recovery and respite plan for unpaid carers.
Tony said, “There are millions of people, many of whom are in Rochdale, who are unpaid carers. They make an enormous contribution to our society, providing vital and often hidden support to friends and family members.
It’s only right that we value them properly, and ensure they have the right support at the right time.
“That’s why I’m calling on the government to develop plans to mitigate some of the negative impacts that caring can have on carers’ own physical and mental health. That must include a recovery and respite plan for unpaid carers, and it must recognise the enormous impact the Covid pandemic has had on carers’ lives.”
Tony Lloyd is one of 23 cross-party Members of Parliament to co-sign an Early Day Motion (EDM), setting out their demands to to help carers’ feel valued and supported. The EDM highlights “that unpaid carers save the British taxpayer £400 billion each year” and stresses that “unpaid carers have been under additional pressure over the past two and a half years and are urgently in need of more support”.
