The Bishop of Manchester has described the Home Office’s plan to deport refugees to Rwanda as a “moral failure”

With reports that the first flights could leave this evening the Bishop,talking on the BBC Newsnight programme said “This has probably reached a new low”

In a letter to The Times this morning signed by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and all of the other 23 bishops’ leaders sitting as Lords Spiritual in the House of Lords, states: “Whether or not the first deportation flight leaves Britain today for Rwanda, this policy should shame us as a nation.”

It adds that “the shame is our own, because our Christian heritage should inspire us to treat asylum seekers with compassion, fairness and justice, as we have for centuries”.
