Whitby is perhaps the quintessential British seaside town in the country.

Fish and chips and award-winning scampi (Trenchers on New Quay Road) on tap, creaking, old finishing boats docked near the shoreline, ghost walks telling ancient tales of horrors from medieval times, and an atmosphere and generally incredible vibe that’ll take your breath away faster than the cold North Sea air hitting your face. Unless you go in the summer, it might not be as cold, but it definitely will be salty.

Whitby will capture your heart a million times over. It might not be as ‘high-end’, so to speak, as Brighton, but it’s the definition of an English seaside town, and we’ve created a comprehensive guide to ensure you get the most out of it.

Visiting Whitby During Peak Periods

As with anywhere you go in the UK during peak periods, Whitby will be busy. It won’t be walking down Camden Market on a Saturday, level busy, but if you go during school holidays or when there’s an event on, it will be so much more difficult to park.

Because Whitby is incredibly popular during event weekends, accommodation fills up months in advance, and prices can spike. To ensure you don’t miss out and can find the most competitive rates on guesthouses, B&Bs, or holiday rentals, check out Cozycozy to compare everything in one place.

If you are going during a peak period, our advice is to try to book accommodation with parking in Whitby included. Whitby is only small, so when it is peak period, Whitby parking spots fill up so fast. Hotels in Whitby or B&B’s are the best for including parking, apartments don’t always have one.

If not, some of the best streets to try include:

  • Argyle Road
  • John Street
  • West Terrace
  • Havelock Place
  • Back St Hilda’s Terrace

You’ve also got Crescent Avenue and Well Cl Square as good options. But, again, if it’s peak busy periods and you’re heading out at midday trying to find parking, you might not be so lucky.

Whitby’s 2026 Events

Probably the most iconic Whitby event has already been for 2026 – Whitby Fish & Ships Festival (May 16 to 17). It’s always at a similar time of year, so if you missed it this year, you have to go in 2026. Is there a more culturally defining event for England than a fish and ships festival? We think not, and the play on words is iconic.

Other upcoming events for 2026 that you can still get your hands on include:

  • Made in Whitby Summer Festival (July 2 to 3): This July Whitby events are always held at Whitby Brewery on East Cliff. The event brings together local creators, artisans, food vendors, and live musicians against the stunning backdrop of Whitby Abbey.
  • Whitby Steampunk Weekend (July 24 to 26): A bit niche, but if you’re into steampunk, then this is actually one of the largest Steampunk gatherings in the UK. You can enjoy markets, exhibitions, and costumed promenades.
  • Whitby Folk Week (August 22 to 28): This is a massive annual celebration of British traditional culture. You’ll find traditional song, dance, music, and storytelling with workshops and ceilidh.

Here’s a calendar for more events that you can still get tickets for in 2026.

Insider Tips and What Not to Miss

Whitby is more than the events, and some of the best times to go are when nothing is happening at all.

Probably one of the biggest insider tips is just to take Whitby slow and walk around all day. Get some award-winning fish and chips or scampi and sit by the sea, wander into local pubs for a pint (or whatever takes your fancy), or go into Whitby’s quirky shops. Whitby is actually a vintage shopper’s heaven, but you can also find a lot of handmade crafts.

There are also must-see spots like the Whitby Abbey, perched on the East Cliff. If you go at sunset, you get to see some really beautiful views of the cute seaside town, the Whitby Heritage Sculpture trail, or the local tour boats, which you can book on the day at the harbour.

Whitby is wholesome. It’s the type of place you go to and realise British culture and heritage still exists. Hopefully our practical travel guide has given you the advice you need to make the most of it.
