Tameside Hospital has become the first hospital in the country to ban sugary snacks from its canteen.

The move follows a successful staff weight-loss scheme at the hospital last year initiated to battle obesity among clinicians who graze on unhealthy snacks to keep going over long shifts.

One hundred staff at the hospital started a 12-week weight loss programme in the summer and to support them, sugary desserts were taken off the menu for a trial period.

The ban applies to all canteens and vending machines and applies to all sugary snacks and fizzy drinks.

The only drinks available are tea, coffee, milk and water.
