Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, has said he won’t “roll over” and place the region under Tier 3 restrictions at the “sight of a cheque”.

Speaking on Sky News Mr Burnham said: “Tier 3 is a serious thing, it’s a serious development if you have to ask people to go into just before winter, just before Christmas…
“People can’t just be pressurised into it and I’m not going to be pressurised into it.
“And I’m not just going to roll over at the sight of a cheque, this is about properly supporting those people whose lives will be damaged by Tier 3.”

Reports this morning say that talks are to resume this morning between Greater Manchester’s leaders and the Government over proposals to place the region into Tier 3 Covid restrictions

The Times reports that Boris Johnson is preparing to “dangle extra cash” for Greater Manchester if a deal is reached to bring in the highest level of lockdown measures

“Talks yesterday between Mr Burnham and Mr Johnson’s chief strategic adviser, Sir Edward Lister, were described as “constructive”, with more discussions planned for today. “I think people need to sleep on stuff this evening,” one government source said.” reports the paper

The Telegraph reports that the Government is prepared to offer the region £100m to move to Tier 3 restrictions
